The Shenandoah Valley?s newest builder is working hard to make sure that the Valley?s environment is protected. The Hine Group is sponsoring a green building seminar in Harrisonburg tomorrow for its employees and building partners to learn the latest techniques in green building. The Hine Group is partnering with EarthCraft House? to train over 50 building professionals about environmentally sensitive building practices.
EarthCraft House? is an innovative new green building program that provides home builders with a set of guidelines to construct energy-efficient and environmentally friendly homes. The program standards were developed in 1999 through a unique partnership between Southface Energy Institute and the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association, government and environmental leaders. Together, they created one of the country?s most progressive home building programs.
?Protecting the environment has always been a top concern for our company,? commented Richard J. Hine, President of The Hine Group. ?When the EarthCraft House? program was launched in 2006, we were pleased to know that we already met a majority of the program?s requirements, and are proud to be the first builder in Harrisonburg to implement the program.?
The Home Builders Association of Virginia (HBAV) and Virginia Sustainable Building Network (VSBN) are excited to introduce the program to Virginia. VSBN partnered with the Blue Ridge Home Builders Association (BRHBA) to officially launch the EarthCraft House Virginia Single Family Program in September 2006. Starting with the Roanoke area, the program is scheduled to expand throughout most of the state in 2007.
Lower utility bills, better indoor air quality, durable construction, and a reduced environmental impact are just a few of the many benefits to living in an EarthCraft House. Buying an EarthCraft House provides the homeowner with extensive savings in lower utility and maintenance costs.
To ensure quality, an EarthCraft House must pass a set of inspections by a certified third-party inspector. Although rigorous, the program standards provide ample room for creativity in the design and building processes. The inspection is based on a flexible point system that includes areas such as site planning, energy efficient techniques and equipment, resource efficient design, waste management, indoor air quality, and water conservation.
EarthCraft House was introduced to Virginia by Governor Timothy M. Kaine. The program is already active in Charlottesville, Roanoke and the Tidewater region of Virginia. The Hine Group is pioneering the program in the Shenandoah Valley, and is building all of their 515 homes in the new-urbanist Preston Lake subdivision to EarthCraft House? specifications.
